New Berne Weekly Journal 16 Oct 1890
Henderson Merrit, a colored man who lived near the Fair ground went to Jacksonville

three weeks ago to work at the blacksmiths trade. He had a congestive chill Tuesday,

died Thursday and the remains were brought to his home in New Berne Friday for 
burial.
