His son Benjamin was my grandfather.) Joseph was General Freight Agent at the train depot and helped start the Wilmington Road. DEATH OF JOSEPH NELSON After a long and severe illness, the soul of Joseph Nelson, Sr., passed into eternity Tuesday morning, August 18th at 2:20 o'clock. Mr. Nelson was born in this city 73 years ago and passed nearly all of his life here, filling several important positions. For some years he was General freight agent of the A & NC railroad; was Register of Deeds of Craven County for eleven years and has been in the service of the Wilmington road ever since it was built here in 1892 until the failure of his health. The deceased was a charter member of the local lodges, of both the Royal Arcanumand Knights of Honor. Mr. Nelson was married in 1874 to Miss Pattie Williams of Warrenton, N. C. His wife, and four children, two boys and two girls survive him. For several years Mr. Nelson's health has been failing but by sheer force of will, he kept up until last March when he sustained a stroke of paralysis from the effect of which he has suffered ever since. On July 5th he received another stroke and again another on August 16th. Although everything was done that medical science could suggest, no relief could be given and the stricken man suffered intensely until the end came yesterday morning. The funeral service will take place at Christ Episcopal church this Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock and the interment will be at Cedar Grove Cemetary under the care of the Royal Arcanum.
