All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/ncfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Elizabeth Sergomassov Killeretk@yahoo.com January 5, 2007, 12:18 pm Source: Nc Archives (secretaryof State's Papers) Written: May 17, 1749 Recorded: October 18, 1749 Will of John Gillett Craven County, NC 1749 In the name of God Amen the Seventeenth Day of May 1749, I John Gillett of Craven County in the Province of North Carolina, planter, being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God, therefore calling to mind the Mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it and my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in decent Christian Burial at the discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the general Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Mighty power of God and as touching such Worldly Estate wherewithal hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give, devise, and dispose of the same in the following manner and form 1 Primis I give and bequeath to my well beloved son John Gillett one horse and all my shoe-makers tools. Item I give and bequeath to my well beloved son Patterson Gillett one Negroe man called Jeffery likewise half of my hoggs and a third part of my sheep. Item I give and bequeath to my well beloved son Anderson Gillett one oval table and four head of cattle. Item I give and bequeath to my well beloved son Moses Gillett one Negroe boy called Jeffery to be delivered when Moses comes of age also one black walnut table. Item I give to my well beloved friend Priscilla Hall all my cattle, half of my hoggs, two thirds of my sheep, all my horses or horse kind together with all my household goods and moveable effects with the residue of a whole estate by her freely to be disposed and enjoyed. I likewise give one Negroe woman called Jenney to the sd. Priscilla Hall at her disposing forever. I also constitute make and ordain John Harper and Priscilla Hall Executor and Executrix of this my last will and testament and I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke, and annul all and every other former testamaent, wills, legacies and bequests and Executors by any ways before named, will and bequeathed, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written. Signed, Sealed, published, pronounced and Declared by the said John Gillett as his last Will and Testament in the presence of us the Subscribers Signed: JOHN GILLETT (remnant of wax seal) Witnessed by: JOHN SIMMONS, EMMANUEL SIMMONS, MARY DUDLEY Additional Comments: This will was filed in Craven County but John Gillett also resided in Onslow County for part of the time between 1728 and 1749 according to court records. Many of his descendants are from Onslow County so I am posting it in both Craven Co and Onslow Co. He was from the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland.
