Will of Samuel Pope, Craven County, North Carolina, 1758: In the Name of God, Amen the fifth Day of January one thousand Seven Hundred and fifty Eight I Samuel Pope of Craven County & Province of North Carolina &c being sick and weak in Body but of sound & perfect memory (praise be given to God for the same) and Knowing The unsertainty of this life on earth and being Desirous to settle all things in Order to make this my last will and Testament in Manner and form following that is to say First and principally I Committ my sole to Almighty god my Creator Assured by believing I shall receive full pardon & Remission of all my sins and be saved by the precious Death and Mercies of my blessed savior and Redemor Christ Jesus & my bod to the Earth from whence it was taken to be buried in such Decent & Christian Manner as to my Executors hereafter Named shall be thought meet and Convenient, and as touching such worldly estate as the lord in mercey hath lent me my will & meaning is The same shall be Employed & bestowed as hereafter by this my Will is Expressed and first I do Revoke renounce fustrate and make void all wills by me formerly made and Declare & appoint this my last will & Testament in manner following. I give and bequeath unto my loveing wife Sarah Pope one Negro woman Named Soll I give until my said wife and her heirs fo ever........... My will and Desire is that my Negro woman Named Roaday and all her Increase hereafter to be Equally Divided between my Children Elizabeth, John, Samuel, Mary & William Pope. When my son Samuel Pope shall arive to the years of Eighteen and not before .............. I give an bequeath unto my beloved son Samuel Pope one peace of Land Containing One Hundred Acres lying & being in Craven County & on the West side of Core Creek which said land I give unto my said son Samuel Pope his heirs & assigns for Ever .................... That my will & Desire is that all my Just Debts be paid and Adjusted and the rest & residue of my Estate both Real & persional of what kind or quality soever that is not before bequeathed & granted be Equally Divided between my beloved wife Sarah Pope & my loveing Children Elizabeth, John, Samuel, Mary & William Pope and I do further Nominate and Appoint my Trusteys and liveing friends, George Pope Senr. and John Turner Executors to this my Last will and Testament In Witness whereof I the said Samuel Pope have hereunto set my hand and Seal this Sixth day of January Anno: Domo: 1758. Signed, Sealed & Delivered Saml. Pope {seal} In the presence of Robert Taylor - jurat George Pope - jurat Betty {her B mark} Lane Craven County Ss. February Court 1750. Present his majestys Justices. Then was the written Will Proved in open court by the Oaths of Robert Taylor and George Pope two of the subscribing Evidences thereto and made Oath that they Saw the Testator Sign, Seal, Publish and Declare the within to be and Contain his Last Will and Testament and that he then was of Sound mind & Disposing memory to the best of their knowledge and that they also see the other Subscribing Evidence Sign as Such at the same time George Pope one of the Exrs. within named Qualified Agreeable to Law And it was Ordered that the Honorable Richard Spaight Esqr.
