Gardner Shelby, North Carolina Dear Sir: You are furnished herein the record of James Blanton as found in pension claim, S. 6653, based upon his service in the Revolutionary War. James Blanton was born March 15, 1765, near Cross Creek which was later Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina. While a resident of Duplin County, North Carolina, James Blanton volunteered and served as a private in the North Carolina militia under Colonel James Kenan, as follows: from January or February, 1780, six weeks or two months in Captain Aaron Williams' Company from which he was detached to go on an expedition of fatigue duty under Captain James Gillaspie, was in an engagement during this tour at Big Bridge and conducted British prisoners to Kingston, length of tour four and one half months; from May, 1781, three months in Captain Aaron Williams' Company of lighthorse and was in an engagement at Rockfish Bridge. After the Revolution, the soldier resided one year in Onslow, next two years in New Hanover County, then again in Duplin County, all in North Carolina. James Blanton was allowed pension on his application executed May 28, 1833, while a resident of Duplin County, North Carolina. It is not stated whether the soldier ever married. In 1835, one Benjamin F. Blanton, age not listed, of Duplin County, North Carolina, made affidavit in behalf of the soldier, James Blanton, but did not state any relationship to him.
