T. H. Carraway, United States Senate, of your letter to him asking for information concerning service in the Revolutionary War rendered by soldiers bearing the name of Caraway, and to advise you that the Commisioner of Pension reports that the Revolutionary War files and records of the Pension Bureau show but one soldier named Carraway to have filed a claim on account of service in the Revolutionary War. This soldier was William Carraway (name also appears as Caraway) and the papers in his claim (R. File No. 1725) show that he lived in Cumberland County, North Carolina at the time of the Revolution; enlisted at Cambridge, South Carolina, date not stated, served about twenty months as Sergeant and Orderly Sergeant under Captains Moore and Smith, Colonel Huger, South Carolina Troops, participated in the siege of Savannah and the battle of Stono, and was discharged June 11, 1780 at Whitehall, South Carolina. He was allowed pension on his application made September 4, 1827, while he was residing in Monroe County, Georgia, and 71 years of age. Reference is made in the papers to a son, Charles, aged 23, a widowed daughter, Mildred Saunders, and his wife's sister, Winneford Averea. He died February 1, 1834, leaving his widow, Elizabeth, who died January 1, 1838. Correspondence on file shows that a son, John Caraway, was living in 1856. Respectfully, M. R. Brock Assistant to the Secretary Source: HeritageQuest -------- (John and Margaret Carraway of Cumberland County had a son named William. Their wills are posted on this county site.
