Cumberland County, NC - Nathan King Revolutionary War Pension, 1832 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1832 Revolutionary War Soldiers Pension Application of Capt. Nathan King of Cumberland County, North Carolina North Carolina } Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Cumberland County } September Term 1832 At this day the 7th of September AD 1832 personally appeared befor me David McNiell one of the acting Justices of the Peace for Cumberland County, specially appointed by the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Capt. Nathan King of Cumberland and after being duly sworn, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benifit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That the said Nathan King now aged eighty two years of age, is so enfeebled by sickness and age that he cannot possibly attend the court now sitting. That 1778 he was commissioned by Gov. Caswell of North Carolina, that he rendezoused at Elizabeth, Bladen County in North Carolina there he engaged and marched into South Carolina under the command of Genl. Jno. Ashe and Colonel James Armstrong of the 5th North Carolina Regt. to which he was attached. They marched together to Savannah River at which place Genl. Ashe ordered up the country and Col. Armstrong with his men to Parisburg and then joined Genl. Lincoln, at that place the Nine month soldiers were apportioned off to fill up the companies and he was sent home to collect and march on balance of the nine months men; He accordingly collect all he could take command of then at Fayettville, then Cross Creek and joined Genl. Lincoln at Parkers Ferry on Edisto River [South Carolina], there they marched from place to place until after the Battle of Stone Ferry June 1779 ~ there remained sometime and marched into South Carolina under the command of Genl. Harrington and there disbanded. He returned to North Carolina and continued skirmishing until peace with the Tories ~ this affidavit further states that he was robbed of his commission and all his papers by a Tory officer one Col. Fanning whilst in Sampson County engaged in suppressing the Tories under one Mobley. Questions Where and in what year were you born? Answer; I was born on the 7th day of November AD 1750. Have you any record of your age, if so where is it? Answer; My age was recorded in my family bible has been destroyed. How were you called into service, were you a volunteer ~ drafted or substitute Answer; I volunteered Where were you called into service (from what place) and where you lived since the war and where are you now living? Answer; I believe it was July 1778 & I lived in Cumberland County No Carolina and here I have lived ever since. Name some of the officers with whom you were aquainted. Answer; Major Rink? Eaton, Capt. Bhelomon? Taylor, Capt. Joseph Thomas Rhodes Where is your commission? Answer; I was robbed of it as stated above. How long did you serve in all? Answer; I served Eighteen months. Haywood King Greensboro, North Carolina Dear Sir: Reference is made to your letter in which you request the record of Nathan King, a Revolutionary War pensioner, who was born in 1750, lived in Cumberland County, North Carolina, where he died in 1833 and was buried. The data which follow is regard to Nathan King were obtained from the papers on file in pension claim, S.7105, based upon his service in the Revolutionary War. Nathan King was born November 7, 1750; the place of birth and the name of his parents were not given. While living in Cumberland County, North Carolina, Nathan King was appointed in July, 1778, Captain, served in Colonel James Armstrong's North Carolina regiment, was in the battle of Stone Ferry, length of service eighteen months. Nathan King was allowed pension on his application executed September 7, 1832, at which time he was a resident of Cumberland County, North Carolina. He died December 31, 1833. There are no data in this claim relative to the family of Nathan King.
