Tuesday, May 18, 1819  Edenton Gazette May 18, 1819
   -- In the Superior Court, holden for Cumberland County, JEREMIAH FIELDS 
was, on Saturday last, tried, convicted, and sentenced by his honor JUDGE 
MURPHY, to a fine of fifty cents, and three years close confinement on a 
charge of passing counterfeit bank notes purporting to be on the State of 
North Carolina. The bill on which the defendant was tried, was a three dollar 
genuine bill altered to one of 50 dollars. -- Fay. Observer
