July 5, 1826 North Carolina Journal July 5, 1826 THE FOURTH OF JULY - 1826 -- The anniversary -- the Jubilee of Liberty -- was celebrated in Fayetteville, on Tuesday last, with that heart-felt joy which manifests the devotion of the citizens of this place to the principles brought into action 50 years ago. The day was ushered in by the deep-mouthed cannon and by the merry peals of several bells in the town. At 9 o'clock the military was put into motion, and after performing several manuevers, highly creditable to the very handsome Uniform-Companies of this place, a procession was formed, consisting of the military and citizens, which proceeded to the Presbyterian Church, where after an eloquent and appropriate prayer for the REV. MR. HAMNER, the Declaration of Independence was read by L. D. HENRY, ESQ., and an oration was delivered by R. STRANGE, ESQ. We had not the pleasure of hearing this oration (being absent, attending a sick friend) but we understand it was classic, appropriate and eloquent. The ceremonies at the Church were closed by a prayer by the REV. MR. MASON. At 3 o'clock, a numberous and respectable company sat down to a sumptuous dinner at the LaFayette Hotel, furnished by MR. TRACY, in his best style. L. D. HENRY, ESQ., presided and was assisted by DUNCAN McRAE and PARIS I. TILLINHAST, ESQS., as vice presidents. Toasts were drunk, interspersed with discharges of artilly, and the jovial songs.
