John Black, of this vicinity. She had been ever since the beginning of August last severly afflicted with a complaint which subjected her to much pain and which was soon ascertained to be the dropsy. During her illness, she manifested much composure and serenity and her conversation savoured much of the spirit and temper of a faithful follower of the meek and lowly Jesus. As her life was drawing near a close, she became fully sensible of her approaching dissolution and no subject seemed to engage her attention so much as the concerns of her immortal soul. The low and humbling view which she had of her own character let her at the first approach of the prospect of death, to entertain some doubt of her acceptance with God but when the unspeakable love of Christ to perishing sinners was held forth to her view, she yielded as if by an irresistible impulse, to its contraining influence. To a minister of the Gospel who visited her repeatedly in her illness and who had an interesting conversation with her on the day preceeding her death, she expresseed in the most explicit terms, her deep conviction of the unsatisfying nature of all earthly things & of the necessity of aspiring after joys which will never have an end; of the absolute insufficiency of any thing she was able to do to procure reconciliation.
