Wed. May  9 ,   1827 North Carolina Journal
   DIED, in Fayetteville, this morning, MR. JAMES BLEVIN, having taken, last 
night, two ounces of laudenum. This young man has been here about four months, 
and was originally from New York. He professed to be traveling to the south. A 
more cool and deliberate act of self-murder has seldom been committed. His 
landlord found this morning a letter addressed to himself, from which we have 
made a few extracts, which shew the motives of his conduct. The laudenum he 
obtained at an apothecary's shop last night under pretense of having the 
toothache.
                                             "Saturday, May 6, 1827
    "I find it useless for me to wait any longer in expectation of receiving 
money, and it is folly to deceive you -- my present situation is a hopeless 
one -- I imposed on you when I told you my Aunt wrote she would send me money -
- she wrote she would NOT send it. -- My resolution was made then what I 
should do, but I was not ready at the time. -- But having been ruminating on 
it since (3 or 4 weeks) the how and when -- my conclusion is, that tomorrow 
night I will take a quietus. I would do it tonight, but I have not the 
wherewithal to provide it. I must manage that tomorrow, and in the evening, 
take it.
    I always have, and still do assure you that I did not come here with an 
intention of staying any length of time, but expected to receive money and go 
further South, and had not the least doubt until the last two or three letter 
came to hand, but that I should receive money and pay you. --Why I have not, 
is more than I can give or find any reason for. -- I have been treated most 
villianously -- but it is no use to complain now."
