MR. MATTHEWS was a native of Fayetteville, and through life sustained uniformly a character of unsullied purity, discharing the various relative duties with fidelity, and with honor to himself and usefulness to others. He, from time to time, filled several offices of trust and profit connected with the County or Town, and always to the entire satisfaction of the community: He, for the last two years, represented this town in the General Assembly and made a most useful and respectable member. He was an honest man, a kind neighbor, an affectionate husband and father, and a valuable member of society. He was interred on Sunday evening, with military honors by the Independent Company, of which he was a member, and which he formerly commanded: the great concourse of people which attended his funeral was an evidence of the general regret at his death, and of the sympathy felt for his afflicted widow and family. His infant son, THOMAS, who had been long been ill, died a few hours before him -- it was an awful and admonitory spectacle to see Father and son stretched on the same bier and consigned at the moment to the silent grave.
