Mr. Henry Whitlock, Pastor of the Episcopal Church in New Haven, Connecticut. It has lately become so common to magnify the talents and virtues of the dead that eulogy has nearly lost its force. The partiality of friends perhaps, should be pardoned; but too often has it veiled the distinction between baseness and real worth, and made the subject of its praise the paragon of excellence. In this instance however, we believe there is little room for exageration. Mr. Whitlock's journey to this country was undertaken for the recovery of his health, a blessing of which he had been deprived a few months since by a pulmonary complaint. From the time of his first illness, his health continued, with partial intermissions, to decline. His mind however, retained its usual vigor and he saw the approach of his dissolutions with dignity and composure. He died as he had lived, an example of the influence of real piety and has left to his friends the consolation of believing that he whose loss they regret with so much sensibility, has gone to receive the reward of his merit. Mr. W. possessed a warm and susceptible heart, was sincere in his attachments and cheerful in his conversation. His easy and conciliatory manners secured the affections of all who knew him. Of this we have sufficient testimony in the flattering attentions paid him by the people of Raleigh and Fayetteville during his residence with them. But let us be silent and if memory will present to our view the virtues of the deceased, may it be our part to emulate them and remember that, A friend when dead, is but removed from sight, Sunk in the lustre of eternal light! And when the parting storms of life are o'er, May yet join us on a happier shore.
