compelled to leave service;
mem. State Constitutional Convs., 1865 and 1875;
admitted to bar, 1868, and began practice;
presidental elector, 1868, 1872;
m. Mary Woodson, Dec. 23, 1874.
Mem. legislature 2 terms, 1868-9 and 1870-1 (speaker last term);
Lt.-gov., 1877; became gov. on election of Gov. Vance to senate, 1879, 
elected, 1880; served until 1885;
US minister to Brazil, 1885-9; elected to fill Senator Vance's term on 
latter's death, 1894, serving until 1895;
delegate at large to Nat. Dem. Conv., 1896.
