All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/ncfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Carolyn Shank Carolynshank@msn.com June 15, 2008, 12:43 pm Source: Edenton Gazette June 26, 1820 Written: June 20, 1820 Recorded: June 26, 1820 PIRACY AND MURDER DEPOSITION OF PELEG CLARKE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA CURRITUCK COUNTY Examination of PELEG CLARKE, taken this day before us, as follows. -- After being duly sworn,deposeth and saith, that in November, 1819, he shipped on board the Brig "General Rondeau"; a Buenos Aires Privateer, as a hand before the mast, under DANIEL MILES, Captain, and cruised up the Straits five months, and captured five prizes, when the crew mutinied and set the Captain and the rest of the Officers on shore off Puerto Rico, except the second Lieutenant named MACK SWANEY, whom they murdered. Then a MR. ROBINSON, who had acted as Gunner, undertook to navigate the vessel under the direction of THOMAS _____, the United States _____ in with an English shi;p and put three men on board of her; after that, when off Wilmington, N. C., they put about 30 men on board a Boston schooner, and about 30 more went on shore, all of whom carried whatever property they pleased or could, with convenience carry off, leaving but seven on board the privateer, who proceded to the north; when off Currituck Beach, about six miles to the soouthward of Currituck Inlet, on the 13th of June, they shot a cannon ball through the bottom of the vessel, and went on shore in the boat with their money and whatever else they can carry. The deponent further states that it was a doubt whether the Officers in the boat ever got ashore or not. PELEG CLARKE Sworn to in due form of law before us this 20th day of June, 1820 C. Rondeau" were in Georgetown, S.
