A will for Jonathan Taylor was dated November 16, 1807 and filed on
December 9, 1807, in Willbook 2, p. 314, follows in its entirety: "In the
name of God, amen, I, Jonathan Taylor being sick and weak of body, but of
sound and disposing mind and memory, and calling to mind the uncertainty of
human life, and that it is appointed to all men to die do make and ordain
this my last will and testament in manor and form following: I give and
bequeath to my son, Zachariah Taylor, the south end of my land whereon he
now lives, beginning at Lemuel Sanderson's line, thense northwesterly along
the main road to a red oak standing near the northwest corner of Nathaniel
Brock's fence, thense westerly to a pine standing at the edge of the flatty
swamp, thense a straight course to a pine at the north end of the shingle
ridge at the cypress swamp, thense along the swamp side to Sanderson's line
thense to the first station, and at his death to his son, Jessie Taylor and
his heirs, also fifty acres of swamp at the head of the Bay to Zachariah
Taylor and his heirs forever. Item - I give and bequeath to my son,
Benjamin Taylor, all the land I hold on Mackies Island to him and his heirs
forever. Item - I give and bequeath to my son, Willoughby Taylor all the
land I hold in the backwoods between Reuben Taylor and Thomas Taylor to him
and his heirs forever. Item - I give and bequeath to my son, Maxey Taylor,
part of my land on the east side of the . . . beginning at a path leading
from Long Point Gut at John Taylor's line running westwardly along John
Taylor's line to a persimmon tree standing in the lane on the west side of
a pond, thense southwardly to a persimmon tree standing in the lane at Amos
Grey's line, thense eastwardly to John Taylor's line, thense along John
Taylor's line to the first station, also one piece of land at the north end
of my land on the west side of the road joining Joseph Simmons beginning at
a pine, my corner tree, running southwardly to a pine stump, thense
westwardly to a pine on the main swamp side, thense northwardly to my line,
thense eastwardly to the first station. And if he dies without heirs
lawfully begotten of his body to fall to my son, Jonathan Taylor, and his
heirs, also my part of the schooner, Betsey, to my son, Maxey, and his
heirs forever. Item - I give and bequeath to my daughter Bridgett Taylor,
two acres of land at the north end of my orchard, beginning at the road
running westerly to a red oak at a pond, thense northwardly to the road,
thense to the first station running along Shingle Ridge, and at her death
or marriage to Jonathan Taylor and his heirs forever. Item - I give and
bequeath to my son, Jonathan Taylor, the land on the plantation whereon I
now living binding on Zachariah Taylor's line and Maxey Taylor's line and
on the main swamp on the other side, also fifty acres of marsh at the head
of the bay. And if he dies without heirs lawfully begotten of his body to
fall to my son, Maxey Taylor and his heirs, also one desk and feather bed
and furniture, the ---- and furniture, one large looking glass, one hand
mill and fifty dollars cash to him and his heirs forever. Item - I give and
bequeath to my daughter, Bridgett Taylor, one negro woman named Judca, two
feather beds and furniture, one horse and chair ----, and ---, one walnut
chest, all my hoggs and poultry and fifty dollars cash to her and her heirs
forever. Item - I give and bequeath to my daughter Betsy Taylor one negro
woman named Pegg, two feather beds and furniture, one new side saddle, one
black walnut desk, one dutch case, and fifty dollars in cash to her and her
heirs forever. Item - I give and bequeath to my five sons all my cyprus
swamp and my juniper swamp to be equally divided between them and theirs
forever. All the remainder of my estate within doors and without I leave to
be equally divided between all my children and their heirs, except my
shooting gun I give to my grandson, Jessie Taylor. Furthermore, I desire
that my daughter, Bridgett Taylor, shall live and stay with my son,
Jonathan Taylor and take care of his property til he come of age, if she
continues a single woman. Lastly I hereby constitute, appoint, and ordain
my two sons, Willoughby Taylor and Maxey Taylor executors to this my last
will and testament, revoking all other will or wills heretofore made,
ratifying and confirming this to be my last will and testament. It witness
whereof I have set my hand and seal this 16th day of November, 1807./
