She was a resident of Manteo, NC. She was born in Surry County, VA on April 24, 1939 to Howard Lee and Claudine Johnson Britt. She was predeceased by her parents and her stepmother, Jo Breeding Britt. She was also predeceased by her first husband, George Spencer Van Cleef, (founder of Van Cleef Auto Parts and Van Cleef Trucking in Waverly, VA), and her son Michael Howard Van Cleef, a sister, Linda Lee Britt, and a brother Douglas Andrew Britt. She is survived by her husband, Charles Douglas Petty of Manteo, NC; a sister, Lori Britt Kilroy of Southern Pines, NC; a brother, Wayne Johnson Britt of Lanexa, VA; a sister-in-law, Sue Britt of Williamsburg, VA; several nieces and nephews in Virginia and North Carolina, her godson, Thomas Guess of Disputanta, VA; and Charles Petty's sons, Dale Petty of Manteo, NC, Rob Petty of Nags Head, NC and daughter, Wendy Aboelmatty of Richmond, VA and their children. Mrs. Petty lived in Waverly, VA, and was active in the community and area. She worked for the Masonite Corporation for over 40 years. She retired in 1998 and moved to Manteo, NC, where she became an active member of the community. She was a passionate member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, preparing the Communion Bread monthly until recently, a compassionate volunteer for Meals on Wheels, a strong supporter of the Emmaus Walk, an avid gardener and volunteer with the Roanoke Island Garden Club, as well as a weekly reading club, and established, this spring, the Helen Britt Van Cleef Petty Fund through the Outer Banks Community Foundation for the Mount Olivet Scholarship Fund. She has loved well and been loved in return and we will all meet again and will rejoice together. The family will receive friends at Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo, on Thursday, April 19, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The funeral service will be held at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 10:00 am, with a graveside committal service in Waverly, VA at 3:30 pm.
