Letter from H. J. Grimes to J. Berrier, Esq. - 1855 Davidson County, NC - Misc. Submitted by Claude Medlin CMedlin@aol.com Farmington N.C. September 3rd 1855 J Berrier Esq. Dear Sir- Yours of August 23rd found me as it left you in good health. I was glad to hear from you and learn that you are all well. Week before last I was very unwell all week, and thought I was going to have the chills, but I did not quite succeed, which I am not very sorry of. There is a great deal of sickness below here, in the neighborhood of Smiths Grove. If I get the chills I will go to the mountains. If you see Holmes or Sledge shortly, please send them up here. They can reap an abundant harvest up here, pleanty of work for them for some time. You say that you have a notion of sending Sally to school- Just keep that notion and be sure to send her- for it will be the best thing you can do for her. I wish you could send Henry also. If you take a notion to send Sally up here, she can get board at $6 or $7 per month. The most of them are charging $6 everything included. Tuition varies from $8 to $12 per session. If she was to take drawing or music lessons it would come higher. I think if she was to come up here she would be very well pleased with the school. The society is very good about here. This session commenced today two weeks ago. I am not very much acquainted with the school at Glenn Anna, though I think it is a very good school. I am slightly acquainted with Miss Nixon and I think she is a very fine lady and know that her qualifications cannot be doubted. I do not know much about Miss Hamptons qualifications as I have not been in her company, or had an opportunity of finding out, since she left school. The female school up here is very small this session. Mr and Mrs Tatum, the teachers, are very well qualified and also very fine people. If you have no choice in the schools, split the difference, by letting Sallie choose for herself. Write to me and let me know what conclusion you have come to. Will you be at Camp Meeting at Mr. Michaels? Perhaps I may be there, if I am well, on Saturday and Sunday, if I have nothing else to do. Write soon Yours H.J. Grimes PS This is an awful letter H'an't it It would not do for Holmes to come along now. =============================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogy information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
