March 23, 1939 Dear Cousin Elvira, I forget when I wrote last but I think it was about Christmas. Aimed to have written you for your anniversary but just have not felt like writing much the past winter. We had not heard from Indiana since last Sept. when dear Aunt Clem fell untill last Nov. 20th when we rec'd a letter from Dale saying our dear Aunt Clem had gone home March 10. I am glad she did not have to be down in bed a long time. But her suffering was so severe anyway. They said her suffering was about ten days, and her memory was poor for a long time. We've always been so thankful dear daddy's memory was clear all the time altho' so weak in body. Did you ever hear whether Aunt Clem got able to walk after that fall out at the door last Sept? Cousin Dale never mentioned it in her letter the other day. I've known so well how sad and lonely they are but she was spared to them a long time. They were all so near down with flu was hard on all. I was so glad Cousin Dale wrote us. But we do wonder how Aunt Clem got after that fall. Is lonely now to know she is gone from us all. We hope you and cousin Gaston have been well this winter and will be spared to each other several years yet. We are anxious to hear from you. Grace like to recall when you were married and the stockings she knit to wear to your wedding. She will be sixty-four tomorrow. Is never very well or strong. Have to hire a man now to plant our garden this year as neither of us are able. Very hard to not be able to do such things but we've both been sick with such deep bronchial coughs all winter. She is overseeing the gardening today. Is warm and sunny. Apricot and peach trees are blooming out. The Jonquils are in bloom so pretty and the Easter Lillies are out. The folks in general are well. Lillian plans on returning to Darlington early in April. She spends the winter in Nebr. with her daughter. Grace rec'd a card from Cousin Allie in Feb. while they were in Florida. Just wonder how long they were gone on their trip. Glad they can enjoy life so much. Just wish every body could take things easy as they grow older. The weather has been changeable this winter. Some real warm days but several snows. We have 3 hens sitting. That is all we aim to set. Feed costs so much. Our few hens laid fine all winter. Hope you will write real soon and all the news. Grace [?] me in much love and congratulations to you both. How are your children?
