Davie Times, 24 Mar 1882 Died in this place after a brief illness, Mr. A.G. Carter, on Sunday morning the 19th of March 1882, at 2:20 a.m. in his 81st year. Mr. Carter was born in Caswell County, March 29, 1801; graduated at the University of North Carolina in 1820, in the class with Judge Battle, Honorable Bat. Moore and other distinguished North Carolinians, and was, at the time of his death, the only surviving member of that class. He moved to this county, then a part of Rowan, and commenced the practice of law, shortly after he married a Miss Wilson and reared a large family. He served as Chairman of the County Court of Davie for nearly thirty years. In his younger days he was among the most energetic and enterpising men of the county. He was a fine businessman and devoted his time to the affairs and saved much money by his judicious management. No man was truer to the conviction of right, and earnestly devoted to whatever effected the welfare of the county. Thus another of the old landmarks have passed away. [Archibald G. Carter married Letitia Wilson 17 Jun 1823, Rowan Co. NC marriage bond. Letitia died 16 Aug 1837 and is buried in Rose Cemetery in Mocksville. Carter appears in the 1850-1880 cemetery records with wife Mary, whom he must have married by about 1839 in order to account for his youngest child, Robert age 10 in 1850. I have not found a record of the second marriage. Their land is valued at $30,000 in 1850, the largest in a county where most households have less than $2500, and they own many slaves.]
