Dobbs County, NC - Court Records File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Grace Williamson Turner Retyped and posted by Annette Roebuck Source: Secretary of State, 1721-1775, Petitions for Re-survey of Land Land Grants, Dobbs County, S.S. 727.4 To His Excellency Josiah Martin, Esquire Governor & Commander in Chief in & over the Province of North Carolina And His Majesty's Honourable Councill now Sitting. The Petition of William Ormond of Dobbs County Humbly Sheweth That Whereas one William Curley (now deceased) in his life time on the twentieth day of April 1745 Obtained of his Excellency Gabriel Johnston Esquire at that time Governor of the said Province, a Patent for three hundred acres of land lying in the said Province at that time in Craven County but since by a Division been called Johnston County & since by a later division Called Dobbs County on the North side of Great Contentney Creek on Cat Tail Swamp, which said land the said William Curley quietly & peaceably possess'd & dwelt thereon many years & cleared & cultivated a great part thereof, And before his death in & by his last Will & Testament Devised the said land to his Son William Curley who peaceably & quietly dwelt thereon & paid Quit Rents to his Majesty's Deputy Receeiver Several years Then Sold & conveyed the said Land to one Elisha Tillman who without any Interruption possessed the said Land until he Sold & Conveyed the same to his Brother John Tillman who peaceably possessed the same untill he Convey'd it to your Petitioner who now remains in quiet Possession which makes Twenty Seven years possession without any dispute or Interruption. Now your Petitioner Humbly means to inform your Excellency & Honours that the Original Patent hath been much Worn & Torn & is only kept together by Pasteing Paper thereto & also appears to have been much wet with water so that the Words are very pale & Dull Scarce Legible & that some part thereof is intirely gone which appears from the Run of the Sence & meaning of the preceeding & succeeding words in the Patent & also as may appear from all the Deeds of Conveyance drawn from the Patent to be the following Words (that is to say) in our Province of North Carolina on the Northside of Great-Contentney-Creek Beginning at a Red Oake on the East side of Cat-Tail-Swamp. & your Petitioner Sent by one James Glasgow Esquire to the Secretary's Office for a Copy of the Patent from the Record, But was inform'd by Mr Parrott the Clerk or Writer in the said Office that he had made a thorough Search & that the Patent never was Recorded in the Secretary's Office & that the Recording of most of the Patents made out about that time when Mr Rice was Secretary were neglected, So that perhaps your Petitioner in time may be without a Proper Title to his land. Your Petitioner further Saith that he hath the old Patent & all the Conveyances as also the Quit Rent Receipt ready to Produce to your Excellency & Honours praying that Your Excellency & Honours would Order the Old Patent to be Recorded with the Words that are lost or gone to be properly Inserted, or to do Otherwise in regard thereto as Shall seem most Convenient to your Excellency & Honours And your Petitioner as in Duty bound will ever pray &c &c Will'm Ormond On reverse: Wm Ormond's Petition.
