Dobbs County, NC - Court Records File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Grace Williamson Turner State of North Carolina } In obedence to a Commishon to us on or other Dobbs County } of us Dericted from the Superior Cort Law and Equity from the District of Newbern November Term 1788 autherising and Impowing us or other of us take the testimony of Ann Barfield widow in a Certain matter of controversey in our Cort Depending where in Stephaines Sheppard is Plantif and Mills Barfield and others Defendants this day parsonable apeard this Deponent before me the Defendents haveing given the Plantif Timely Notes the Plantif faling to apear - this Deponent being sworn on the Holy Evangelists of allmighty god Deposeth and Sayath that in he Night time of the 13 day of Aprill in the year of our Lord 1788 this Deponent was at Home at her one hous had bin a bead and a sleep when he grand daughter Nancy Barfield com to this Deponenet hous and told him he must gow home with her and see her children killed for there was an army of men sent for to com and kill them this Deponent in grate suprise got up and with much Defilty whent home with his granddaughter which was les than half a mile when this Deponenet come near his son Mills his hous in an orchard of Apell trees Deponent heard a spat noyse of People his granddaughter being sum small distance before him this Deponents Drew near the Company shee was surpriswed at the report of the his of a gun but was not nighanough to see who Discharge the fun or what it was at coming up to the company this Deponene saw his two sons William and Mills lying on thr ground abought 16 or so feet a sunder and fore men standing by them with clubs or sum such weepons in their hands there was more people shee took to be Negrows but did not know who thay were one of the men that stood with a club in his hand was William Shepperd another was Martin Gardner Sheppard the other two men shee beleves to be Thomas Branton & James Martain by seeing them in the company afterwards this Deponent whent to her son Mills to see if theare was any Life in him but told ___ to her site throught he was dead turning to his sd William to see if theare was any life in him felt in his Buzam throught he was dead while this Deponent was standing in this grat surprise one the Shepperd held a club over his head said ___ I will kill him another made __________________________________________________________________________ USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
