Dobbs County   }  The Deposition of Joseph Bruton taken before me one of 
the Justices of Dobbs County this 20th March 1782 on the 15th Instants 
about an Hour & a half in the night (after day light) heard A Gun towards 
Hardy Powells, went there found Powell on the Bed dead, knows not who killed 
or wounded him, appeared to have died of Gunshot wounds, Saw (next morning) 
the Track of a person to the House & from it twice, at a Hole between two 
Logs of the House, the Logs were Stained with powder the Track appeared to 
be half an Inch longer than his own Shoe
          further Saith not                    Joseph Bruton

     The above Joseph Bruton Bound in one hundred thousand pounds to appear
at Newbern Sup'r Court the 15th May next to give Evidence against Thomas
Vause
