ROBERTSON being first sworn upon the Holy evangelist of Almighty God, Deposeth and Sayeth that a Certain Thomas BUTCHER Sen'r did on Sunday ye 10th of May speak, Words as follows To Wit That Gen'l. HOWES Armey was betwext Col. Ab'm. SHEPPARDs Regiment and Gen'l. WASHINGTON and that Col. SHEPPARD Could not get to Gen'l. WASHINGTON and that Gen'l HOWE had Taken all the Great Guns or artilery from Gen'l. WASHINGTON, and that Gen'l. WASHINGTON had nothing but Small arms to Defend himself with and that WASHINGTON had never gained one fight since the Beginning of the Warr, and also that Gen'l. HOW had never attempted to git to any Place but that he had done it, & this Deponant further Sayeth Not. On reverse: The within Deposition vs Tho's. Butcher Taken before Ben'j. Exum, J.P. Peggy ROBERTSON being first sworn upon the Holy evangelist of Almighty God Deposeth and sayeth that a Certain Thomas BUTCHER Sen'r. did on Sunday ye 10th day of May speak Words as follows, to Witt, That the Said Thomas BUTCHER said he was Informed that Gen'l. HOW had got betwext Col. SHEPPARD, and Gen'l. WASHINGTON, and that they could not git together and that HOW had Taken all Gen'l. WASHINGTONS Great Gunns or artilery and that WASHINGTON had nothing but Small arms to defend himself with and this deponant further Sayeth not. This deposition taken before me. Benj. EXUM J.P. State of No Carolina } Dobbs County } Be it remembered that on ye 28th day of August in the year of our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Eight John ROBERTSON & his wife Peggy ROBERTSON Personally came before me Ben'j. EXUM Esq. one of the Justices assigned to keep the peace in & for the County aforesaid and acknowledged themselves indebted to his Excellency Richard CASWELL Esq'r. Governor & his Successors, in the sum of Two Thousand pounds to be Levied of their goods Chattells Lands & Tenements respectively to the use of the said State upon Condition that if the above Bounded John ROBERTSON and Peggy ROBERTSON shall Personally Appear at the Next Sup'r. Court to be held for the District of New Bern in the Town of New Bern on ye Twentieth day of Nov. Next then and their to give Evidence in Behalf of the State against Tho's.
