Dobbs County, NC - Court Records File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Grace Williamson Turner Transcribed and posted by Lori Price Cobb (jhcobb@iquest.net) New Bern District Superior Court Criminal Action Papers D.S.C.R.206.326.1 1761-1775 (Broken Series) 1777-1784 State of North Carolina } Dobbs County } Whereas Complaint hath been made to Maj'r Croom Esq'r one of the Justices assigned to keep the peace in the said County, On the Oath of William Falkner that on the night of Friday the fifteenth Instant a Certain Hardy Powell in his own dwelling house in the said County was in a Secret manner fired upon with a Gun and by the force of the Gunpowder discharged from the said Gun Sundry Leaden shot entered into the Body of the said Hardy and by the wounds he then & there received as afores'd He the said Hardy instantly died, And in further appearing to me the said Justice on the Oath of the said William Falkner that there is great reason to Suspect a Certain Thomas Vause late of the said County Labourer to have feloniously perpetrated the said offence by killing & Murdering the said Hardy Contrary to peace & Dignity of the said State. You are therefore Commanded, in the name of the said State, to take the body of the said Thomas Vause and bring him before me or some other Justice of the peace for the County afores'd to answer to the said Complaint, And in case of need, you are to raise the power of the County to assist you in the due execution hereof, fail not & this shall be your Warrant Given under my hand & seal the 17th day of March Anno Dom 1782 To the Sheriff of Dobbs County Maj'r Croom or any Constable of the said County or to James Hutchins specially appointed to execute & return Or to Mathew Mosely Specially to return(?)
