To the Honb'le The General Assembly
of North Carolina

The Petition of Samuel Speight of Dobbs County Sheweth that Jesse son of 
Rachal Hay is the natural son of your Petitioner he therefore prays your 
Honb'le Body will be pleased to pass an act for altering the name of Hay to 
Speight to the end the said Jesse may be capable of inheriting &c.
Your petitioner as in duty bound will pray &c.
Samuel Speight

Whereas Samuel Speight the natural father of Jesse Hay son of Rachal Hay hath 
petitioned the Assembly that the name of the said Hay be altered by law to 
that of Speight.

Be it therefore enacted by the General Assembly of the State of North Carolina 
and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same that from and after the 
passing of this act the name of Jesse Hay shall be altered in the name of 
Jesse Speight and shall thence forth be called and known by the name of Jesse 
Speight and that by the said name of Jesse Speight he shall and may sue and be 
sued plea and be impleaded in any court of law or equity and obtain and 
possess lands and all other species of property by will devise donatation 
grant purchase or otherwise and he may by the same name of Jesse Speight sell 
and dispose of lands and other property already or hereafter to be acquired 
and finally in all things the said Jesse shall be able and capable in law and 
equity of negouating and tranacting all manner of business by the name of 
Jesse Speight in as full and ample manner as if he had been called and known 
by no other name from the time of his nativity any law usage or custom to the 
contrary notwithstanding.
