Dobbs County, NC - Court Records File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Grace Williams Turner Transcribed and posted by Sue Guptill [Note: the first paragraph of this document was a poor copy--ink had bled through from back to front of document-sbg] Dobbs County: Be it remembered that on the Sixth Day of July in the fourteenth year of the reign of Lord Sovereign George the King, etc., in the Year of our Lord One thousand Seven Hundred & seventy-four Thomas LANE alias FAIL late of Dobbs county Planter and Patty his wife, John Batchelor BRAND and Mark MEARS late of the said county Planters personally appeared Before me Richard CASWELL one of the Justices of our Lord the King assigned to keep the peace in the said County, and the said Thos., John & Mark acknowledged themselves to be Indebted our said Lord the King, That is to say, the said Thomas the Sum of two hundred pounds proclamation Money and the said John & Mark the sum of One hundred pounds like money each to Levied of their Goods and chattels Lands & Tenements respectively to the use of our said Lord the King his Heirs and Successors if the said Patty shall make default in the Condition as under written. The condition of this recognisance is such That if the above named Patty wife of Thomas LANE alias FAIL shall personally appear before the Justices of the said Court of Oyer & Terminer and General Gaol delivery to be held for the District of Newbern at the courthouse in Newbern on the Tenth day of July Instant to answer all such matters and things as shall be then & there objected against her by William ALDRIDGE of Dobbs county aforesaid Planter in behalf of our said Lord the King concerning her having wilfully & corruptly taken a False Oath Before George MILLER Esquire one of the Justices of the said county and do & receive what shall be enjoined by the said court and not depart the same without Leave, then this recognizance to be void, otherwise to be & remain in full force & Virtue in Law. Acknowledged Before R CASWELL [next page] The King vs. Patty wife of Thomas LANE alias FAIL: For Perjury William ALDRIDGE late of Dobbs county planter Bound on £100 proc. money payable to our Lord the King in the usual manner conditioned to appear at the Court on the ? Recognizance mentioned to prosecute & give evidence against the above named Patty [illegible] in due form of law. Before R CASWELL George MILLER of Dobbs County Esq. Acknowledged in due form R CASWELL [next page] Dobbs County John HANKS being solemnly sworn saith That on the fourth day of June lst he heard Patty LANE alias FAIL Swear before George MILLER Esq. one of the Justices of this county that William ALDRIDGE had robbed her of Twenty one pounds Ten Shillings on the [next 2 lines are illegible] the money of her Brother John BRAND not long ago, that they, meaning her husband & herself as he believes, had been laying up Money five or Six years and that the Deponent about the first of April last did Count Eight pounds which Thomas FAIL husband of the said Patty was in possession of & that Since the day the Robbery was Sayed to be Comitted he saw Mr. BRAND pay to the said Thos. LANE thirty odd pounds a part of Which he believes was the Identical Money ROACH paid him. Jno HANCKS Sworn the 6th of July 1774 [next page] Dobbs County Brittle FIELDS being solemnly Sworn Saith that he Heard Patty LANE alias FAIL say upon her Oath before George MILLER 4 June last she was Robbed by William ALDRIDGE near his house of a Sum of Money this amot. was upwards of Twenty pounds, the Robbery was Committed she sayed the 30th of May [next 2 lines illegible] of her brother John BRAND. Sworn the 6th July 1774 Brittle [X] FIELD Before R CASWELL Dobbs County Charles HINES being Sworn, Saith That he heard Patty the wife of Thos. LANE alias FAIL Swear Before George MILLER Esq. one of the Justices of said County on or about the fourth of June last That William Aldreidge took from her by force near his own house Twenty one pounds ten Shillings & did not return it, on her being asked on Oath where she got the Money she was robbed of she sayed she got fifteen or Sixteen pounds [rest is cut off]. [next page] North Carolina Dobbs County William ALDRIDGE being Solemnly Sworn declares that Patty the wife of Thomas LANE alias FAIL came to his House on the thirtieth day of May last, called him out mentioned the payment of a Note he had of her husbands for Sixteen pounds that she did not pay any Money to him or offer him any and that she did not directly or Indirectly [torn] or receive any Money from her.
