At a Superior Court of Justice begun and held at New Bern on Thursday 
the Eleventh Day of May in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven 
hundred and sixty Nine Before the Honourable Martin Howard Esqr Chief 
Justice of the said Province and Maurice Moore Esqr his associate 
Justices on the sd Court

The Jurors for our Sovereign Lord the King upon their Oath Present and 
say that John McClendon late of St Patricks Parish in Dobbs County 
Planter on the fourteenth Day of March in the Ninth year of the reign 
of our Sovereign George the Third by the Grace of God of Great Britain 
King (and soforth) and in the year of our Lord the King then and there 
being an assault did Make and him the said Charles White then & there 
did Beat would and ill-treat so that his Life was greatly dispaired of 
and other wrongs then and there did to the great Damage of the Said 
Charles White and against the Peace of our said Lord the King his Crown 
and Dignity
