While residing in Wayne County, he enlisted and served as a private with the North Carolina Troops as follows: from January, 1776, three months in Captain John Shepherd’s Company, Colonel Richard Caswell’s Regiment and was in the battle of Moore’s Creek; from November 1777, five months in Captain Abraham Shepherd’s Company, Colonel Shepherd’s Regiment; from November 1778, five months in Captain Shute’s Company, Colonel William Caswell’s Regiment, and was in the battle of Brier Creek. He moved from Wayne County to Anson County, NC and was allowed pension on his application executed October 11, 1832 at which time he was living in Anson County where he had lived about twenty two years. He married in October 1780 in Wayne County, NC, Penelope Blow. He died August 20, 1839. His widow, Penelope Braswell, was allowed pension on her application executed July 25, 1840 at which time she was aged seventy nine years and living in Anson County. She died August 30, 1846. Children’s names and dates of births are listed as follows: Richard born October 27, 1781; Delaney (daughter) born May 14, 1782; Elizabeth born July 22, 1784; Burel or Burwell born November 30, 1787; Urvin (son) born March 2, 1790; Benjamin Blo born June 28, 1795; Pattey born September 19, --; Bryant born October 22, 1799; Cullen born April 18, 1801.
