Cogdell, George - 1759 - Dobbs County, NC - Wills Submitted for use in the USGenWeb Archives by Guy Potts Will of George Cogdell - December 15, 1759 Dobbs County, North Carolina In the name of God Amen I, George Cogdell of Dobbs County in the Province of North Carolina planter calling unto mind the mortality of the body and that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, First, I recommend my soul to God that gave it and my body to be buried in a decent frugal manner at the discretion of my Executors and as to my estate with which it hath pleased God to bless me, I dispose of in the following manner, Item, I give to my well beloved wife Margaret Cogdell during her natural life or widowhood the land whereon I now live and all my Negroes Viz Peter Cato Sam Chlock Rose Dinah Jack and Doll and their increases and all my cattle horses sheep hogs household furniture plantation tools and conveniencies belonging to the plantation to better to enable her to give learning to and maintain the small children. Item, After the decease of my beloved wife, I give and bequeath to my son Francis my daughter Sarah and two sons Charles and David a Negro wench named Dinah and a boy named Jack and a girl named Doll them and their increase from this day to be equally divided between Francis Sarah Charles and David to them and their heirs forever to be divided when Sarah shall come to age of twenty years old. Item, It is my will and desire that a piece of land called Doteye (?) Neck in Carteret County maybe sold and the money arising from the sale may be applied towards paying my debts and what ? which may be easily done as I am not much in debt. Item, It is my will and desire that all the remainder of my estate including the Negroes Peter Cato Sam Chlock Rose and their interest together with all my horses cattle sheep hogs the land I now live on household furniture etc. shall be of my well beloved wife divided amongst my children as she shall think just to dispose of them after her demise reserving the work of the Negroes and what else may be arisen to enable guardians to bring up the young children if it is please God she dies before the children come to age. Item, I give to my son Richard my half of the lands in two patents lying in Black Walnut Neck on the west side of White Oak River in Onslow County which land my brother Charles Cogdell and I bought of Robert Atkin to him and his heirs forever. And I do here appoint my well beloved wife, Margaret Cogdell Executrix and Richard Caswell and my beloved son Richard Cogdell Executors of this my last Will and Testament to see that my will is fulfilled and justice done which is what I desire. John Pipkin Lewis Bryant Luke Pipkin North Carolina Dobbs County - April Court - 1761 Present his Majesty's Justices The within last Will and Testament of George Cogdell late of Dobbs County deceased was exhibited into Court and proved by the oath of Luke Pipkin one of the subscribing Evidences who swore that he saw the Testator sign seal publish and declare the same to be his last Will and Testament and at the time thereof he was of sound mind and memory and that he also saw John Pipkin and Lewis Bryant evidence the same with him. At the same time Richard Caswell one of the Executors thereon named appeared and was qualified by taking the oath by law appointed, ordered that ? have notice that letters may issue accordingly. A true copy from the Record - M. Caswell, Clk Wayne County July - Court 1783 I do hereby certify that Mr. Richard Cogdell of the Executors mentioned in the within will came into Court and qualified by taking the oath of law required as an Executor.
