Hill, of Duplin. Died at His Home at Faison, N. C., Monday Night-The Funeral The Star chronicles with regret the death of Col. W. E. Hill, one of Duplin county's most prominent citizens, which occurred at his home at Faison, N. C. Monday evening. Col. Hill is well known in Wilmington and was 71 years of age at his death. He was graduated from the University in 1840 and was one of the most cultured and esteemed men in Eastern North Carolina. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and four sons, all of whom have the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends. The daughters reside at the late home of their father at Faison and the sons are Mr. John Sprunt Hill, a prominent attorney in New York; Mr. E. J. Hill, also an attorney, residing in California and former consul at Monteveidio; Mr. I. F. Hill, State Senator from Duplin county, this State, and Dr. C. D. Hill, a practicing physician of prominence in Jersey City. The arrival of Mr. John Sprunt Hill delayed the funeral arrangement until yesterday. October 3, 1922: Hold Funeral Services for Mrs. Bettie W. Hill. Faison, Oct. 3- Funeral services for Mrs. Bettie W. Hill, who died on Sunday at her home here, were conducted yesterday afternoon at the Faison Presbyterian Church by Rev. Peter McIntyre, of Goldsboro. Mrs. Hill was born on March 9, 1836 and was the daughter of Dr. James H. Hicks and his wife, Eliza Miller Hicks, and was the widow of Colonel Christopher D. Hill. Socially she was prominent, and she was of that fine type of Christian womanhood which rendered her at all times popular, and made her dear to and beloved by those who knew her. She is survived by one son, Mr. R. D. Hill, by a sister, Miss Georgie Hicks, and by a large number of nephews and nieces. [NOTE: an identical obituary, dated October 4, 1922, is also attached to the Bible.] Major W. W. Peirce (Washington Post). On Wednesday, August 22nd, the body of Maj. Wentworth W. Peirce arrived from Milledgeville, Ga., where he had been undergoing treatment for injuries from poisonous gasses during the World War. A military escort from the American Legion had been detailed to meet the funeral party at Union Station, where the body of Maj. Peirce was received and borne to the home of Mrs. E. Rust Smith, mother of Mrs. Peirce, and with whom Mrs. Peirce had been spending the time during his illness. Members of his family were assembled in Washington for the funeral. Rev. Peter McIntyre, of the Presbyterian church of Goldsboro, N.C., of which Maj. Peirce was a member, was present and conducted the services at home. Chaplain Scott of Ft. Meyer was present also. Following this the body was again taken in charge by the American Legion and accompanied by friends and relatives to Arlington National Cemetery. There the procession was met at the gates by a second detachment of soldiers, a firing squad and the band from Ft. Meyer. Thence, the procession moved slowly, winding its way with military precision to the spot of interment, led by the band playing Chopin's funeral march. As the body was being taken from the bier, the band played softly "Nearer My God to Thee." While it halted, the soldiers stood at attention, salutes were fired, and in the sound of taps, the brave soldier responded to his last call, as was expressed in the concluding remarks of the Chaplain, "The Strife is o'er; The battle done. The Victory of Life is Won; The song of freedom is begun." In Memoriam: Mrs. Martha W. Faison. After several months suffering from a painful disease this estimable lady departed this life August 4th, and was buried in the Faison cemetery, Aug. 5th. Mrs. Faison was the daughter of Jas. H. Hicks, M.D., and was born on the Hicks' plantation near Faison, Jan. 3, 1832. she received her education at the Warrenton Female Seminary, was married December 11, 1848 to Dr. Henry W. Faison, one of the most noted physicians of his day in the State. After her husband's death she continued to live at their home two miles from Faison until her own demise. Mrs. Faison was a lovely character and lived a beautiful life. In manner she was refined, quiet and gentle, almost to timidity. In disposition she was even and unselfish, and sympathetic. In spirit, longsuffering, steadfast and loving. Her resignation and unswerving faith in trouble and affliction were something remarkable, and called upon to suffer more than ordinarily, both physical pain and through her affections, her faith never waivered. She trusted God, and believed He would lead her out of all her distress. At the last she feared not, but welcomed the valley of the shadows for she knew the Good Shepherd was there. Her life was a daily example to her family and circle of friends of the reality and beauty of a life had with God in Christ; her death was the happy release of a soul tried and true, from its earthly prison, and her memory is a perpetual benediction. She was for many years a member of the Presbyterian church to whose interests she was devoted. As wife, as mother, as sister, as disciple, as friend, she acted a loyal, a tender and a noble part. God has taken her home, but her works do follow her. Her sons, Mr. Henry E. Faison, of Clinton, Dr. J. M. Faison and Mr. W. M. Faison, of Faison. Her daughters Mrs. Sallie F. Pierce, of Warsaw and Messrs. W. M. Faison, of Faison; and her sisters Mrs. B. W. Hill, of Faison, and Mrs. Georgia Hicks of Fayetteville, were the members of her immediate family who were enabled to attend the funeral observances which were held in the Presbyterian church in Faison.??HUNTER FAMILY I.
