Historical Society, Rose Hill, N.C. with kind permission of Dr. Dallas HERRING. James M. SLOAN Family Bible This record was copied by the late Judge M. E. JOHNSON, Ordinary of Lanier Co., Georgia; and who married a daughter of James M. SLOAN and was furnished by him to the Editor of the Ga. Genealogical Magazine some years back. As will be observed, the family was originally from Duplin Co., N.C. James M. SLOAN was married in South Carolina and moved to Mississippi for a brief stay, then to Echols Co., Ga.; thence to Barrien (now Lanier) Co., Ga.; where he died. The following record was kept by James M. SLOAN. David SLOAN, the father of James M. SLOAN was born July 19, 1797 in Duplin Co., N.C. and died there Jan. 16, 1873. Diadema MURRAY was born Feb. 25th, (year not stated in record) and was married to David SLOAN in Duplin Co., N.C. She died of consumption. James M. SLOAN, son of David and Diadema SLOAN, was born Jan. 18, 1833 in Duplin Co., N.C. Died Nov. 20, 1894. Martha Susannah GORDON was born Nov. 4, 1834, in Sumter Co., S.C. and was married to James M. SLOAN, Sept. 3, 1856, by Rev. W. H. BRUNSEN, M.E. Minister. John F. GORDON, father of Mrs. J. M. SLOAN, was born Sept. 29, 1794, in Sumter Co., S.C. Sara BRUNSON, his wife and mother of Mrs. SLOAN, was born July 3, 1808, in Sumter District, S.C. They were married July 3, 1828. Mrs. Martha Susannah Gordon SLOAN died Oct. 25, 1908. Children of James M. and Martha Susannah SLOAN: 1) John Fisher SLOAN was born April 15, 1858 in Sumter Co., .S.C, died Sept. 10, 1930, Lakeland, Fla. Dicy Virginia WOODARD was born (blank date) and married John F. SLOAN, Jan. 14, 1880 and died Sept. 15, 1882, in Berrien Co., Ga. 2) Emma Jane SLOAN was born Nov. 8, 1859, in Sumter Co., S.C. She died Sept. 7, 1871, in Bulloch Co., Ala.; and was buried in Midway Baptist Churchyard. 3) Mary Ann SLOAN was born June 21, 1861, in Kemper Co., Miss; and died in Sumter Co., S.C.; Jan. 3, 1863. 4) Sarah Virginia SLOAN was born Feb. 2, 1864. Married Lewis Levi Jefferson KNIGHT, April 2, 1882. She died April 17, 1944. 5) Martha Ida Letitia SLOAN, was born Nov. 5, 1867 in Echols Co., Ga. She married James D. RAY, Dec. 26, 1886, in Berrien Co., Ga. She died Aug. 29, 1930 in Savannah, Ga. James D. RAY was born Feb. 29, 1868. 6) Susan Evelyn SLOAN was born Jan. 5, 1870, in Echols Co., Ga. And married Frank WILLIAMS, Dec. 3, 1891. He died Jan. 1935. She died Sept. 19, 1940. 7) Catherine Diademma SLOAN was born March 10, 1872, in Berrien Co., Ga. She married W. I. BARKER, Feb. 4, 1896. Died Nov. 7, 1901. 8) Celia Frances SLOAN, was born May 28, 1874; married R. T. BERRYHILL at Milltown, Berrien Co., Ga., Dec. 17, 1895. 9) Minnie Gordon SLOAN, was born July 17, 1876, in Berrien Co., Ga. Married Merritt? E. JOHNSON, Jan. 17, 1904. 10) William David SLOAN, M. D.; was born March 12, 1879, in Berrien Co., Ga. And died Jan. 10, 1935, in Lanier Co., Ga. 11) Ernest Winborn SLOAN was born Nov. 28, 1879, in Berrien Co., Ga. Died Sept. 17, 1882, in Berrien Co., Ga. Children of David and Diadema SLOAN: James Murray SLOAN; Sarah Ann SLOAN; Mary Susan SLOAN; Jane Catherine SLOAN; Esther SLOAN died in N.C., Aug. 8, 1884; Amanda Eliza SLOAN; William Herring SLOAN, and the following children who died young: Elizabeth Jane SLOAN; John David SLOAN; Christopher Columbus SLOAN.
