General Assembly Sessions Records Nov-Dec 1813 Box 1 Committee of Divorce and Alimony to whom was referred the petition of John DEVER of Duplin County praying to be divorced from his wife Elizabeth, report the following facts: the said John DEVER some time in the year 1804 became connected in wedlock with Elizabeth GRAY....that the said Elizabeth within two or three years after the bonds of matrimony were solemnized, left the house and protection of the said John..that since the period of her elopement, she has more than once become a mother and shameful as it to relate, it appears that these adulterous connections have been confined to persons of her own colour....that the said Elizabeth for the last two years has resided under the roof of a Slave, and that she actually claims as her child and has suckled at her breast an infant bearing the most certain marks of a coloured Father" Petition passed in two sessions In third session....20 Dec 1813....Divorce REJECTED
