H. Feb. 3, 1779 To the Honorable the Gen. Assembly of the State of North Carolina, Now sitting. The Petition of Sundry of the Free Holders and free men, Inhabitants of the County of Duplin, Humbly Sheweth: That Whereas at the last Session of this Assembly at New Bern, there was a Petition laid before you Honorable House from Sundry of the Inhabitants of the Counties of New Hanover and Bladen and Several others, Inhabitants of the lower parts of this County seting forth their desire of having a New County Erected between the No E river and the No W branch of Cape Fear River upon both sides of Black river and upon the Waters of Rockfish Creek W including part of East of the said Counties of N. Hanover Bladen & Duplin. We your Petitioners relying on the Wisdom and Justice of your Honorable House, and being fully Convinced that if a County should be Erected agreeable to the said Petition, a number of the Inhabitants ------------new page image 033 of this County would thereby thereby become subject to many Inconveniences, the whole County liable to Several Additional Expenses in Consequence of which a General Discontent would ensure, We therefore beg leave to State the Case in a True light before Your Honorable House. The County of Duplin is at least Sixty Miles in length from the Bounds of Onslow to the Bounds of Cumberland and is Scarce thirty miles wide in the Middle from the line of New Hanover to the Bounds of Dobbs County and the Court House at present is Situated as near the Centre as Conveniency will admit. The upper line of the New County Petitions for if erected agreeable to the Petition will extend within Six or Seven Miles of the Court House in this County by which Means this County will not be Twenty Miles Wide in the Middle and both ends will remain at their Full Extent and Width, by which Means the Court House will be Distant from the Centre of the Inhabitants and Consquently liable To be removed to another place and Sundry ------------new page image 034 New Roads & necessary to be Cut and repaired to lead thereto at the Public Expens of the County and Discontent of man of its Inhabitants. We your Petitioners do therefore Humbly Pray your Honorable House will take the matter Seriously into your Consideration, and if it should seem reasonable to you, We Trust you will not annex any Part of this County to any New Erected County or to any other County whatsoever, unless agreed to by the Consent and approbation of our representatives.
