Mercer said to be twenty and Sophrona to be over 18 and both lived in Lenoir County Bryan Smith denies ages were wrong - Sophrona was a resident of Duplin Co and lived with her father Bryan Smith and she was not 16 years old - statement made 18 April 1881 Bryan Smith said that B. L. Taylor, Register of Deeds in Lenoir, issued a Marriage License - John Mercer was son of John Mercer dec and Penelope Turner - mother was a resident of Lenoir County - Sophrona was a daughter of Bryan Smith and Susan Smith - father living and Mother dead George Turner, J. P. Lenoir married them on 15 May 1880 at his residence with Isaac Stroud of Duplin and Richard N. Mercer of Lenoir and S. M.
