He was the son of Benjamin Padgett & Hannah James. His administrator of his will, his oldest son John W. Padgett, states that he had 8 children at his time of death. China Grove, Ala April 19 State of Alabama, Pike County Dear Brother I this day take my pen in hand to inform you that I am well, hoping these few line may find you and yours enjoying the same like blessing. Dear Brother I have the pleasure of Receiving your epistle of the 15th of Dec last favored by Mr. Pickett which gave me great satisfaction to hear from you all an moresoever glad to hear of your good health . I have nothing of importance to inform you of at present all of our old No. Car. friends are all well at present as far as I know and well pleased at their move, and I think they are doing much better than they ever were and a prospect of doing a great deal better for they have purchased land and about paid for it and know they will begin to make money and situate themselves for living well. With regard to myself I am doing like I always was work and when I ploy I ploy.(plow) Last year I ployed this year I work as you have understood I purchased a small tract of land this year I attend to Mr. Picketts business and cultivate my own land with his hands. I have about 20 acres under cultivation. It is uncertain what I shall get owing to seasons and price of cotton at expect to plant cotton principally, my land is good for 8 or 10 hundred weight of cotton per acre if seasons prove favorable. I purchased 100 and 20 acres of land at 4 Dollars per acre. Last winter I purchased 8 head of cattle, 35 head of hogs which cost me 1.42 dollars. I yet have the Rise of $100 page 2 Provisions are high hear. Bken (Bacon) is north from $15 to 18 per hundred, Sugar 10 per lb. Salt per sack $5. Cotten from 11 to 18 per larger? 70 cts Corn 50 lbs per bushel, Cotton from 11 to 15 cts per lb But very little in Market at this season of the year. Dear Brother I have but little news to inform you of at present Cousin Joab and Samuel is here in this section, they arrive hear on the 24 of Dec? Last. They live in about 10 or 12 miles of me. I saw them a few days since. They were well and well pleased with their move. Joab/Jacob when I saw him was working at the blacksmiths trade. I think he may do good business if he will hold on at it, Samuel is working at $10 per month I understand Hirehands wages are very low here this year to what it commonly bin of late . I understand that Jacob and Nelson had a fight before Jacob left. I should a thought that they would a bin the last that would a fit. Jacob never hinted the like to me, I am sorry that they did not conduct themselves well and moreover sorry to hear of the false account Relayed against Jacob. I hope they will refrain from bad practices. I am sorry to hear of so many misfortunes amongst my people. I think it is time for several of them to seek for better countries. If it is not hear there are many other countries much better than there. If Spicer and Nelson had a stayed and a liked they might a done much better than they probably ever can do except they have better luck then common.? Dear Brother you Request to know if I expect to come to that country soon or not. I do not expect to come soon a person in my situation cannot well leave off it throws him two much out of business page 3 to leave for 6 months at a time. I should be very glad to see you all once more and moreover glad to converse with you once more in this life however it is very uncertain who then? I ever shall or know except you some where I am. Dear Brother I think you might do well in this country if you could like. There are a great many people that comes to this country that does not like . Therefore I would not recommend any person that has a family to move them here till they come and look first and then they can tell how they would like till some experience. Generally speaking the longer in person they here the better he likes. Dear Brother you filled up your letter just like I want to see them filled out it and have no reason to doubt it me not a word in it. I can say that you have given me the most pastoral obtain into what I have ever had since Ieft the state. You know it is in great? satisfaction to me to hear all the news about my people let it be good or bad and I am much oblige to you for letting me know how they are all doing. Do excuse me if you please for my delay once in writing for I have the least chance to write that I ever had in my life. So if you please right to me as soon as this comes to hand. Tell Brother Isaac I think hard of him for not writing to me before now? as soon as one gets my —— bequest writing. Cousin Thomas Lanier has never wrote a line to me since he was married. Give my love to all inquiring friends and Relations especially to your mother, take a part to yourself and family. Nothing more at present. Hoping our last day may be out best and through divine grace that one may be enabled to realise station with the ever blessed in the world to come.
