Duplin County, NC - Jesse Grimes Letters ----¤¤¤---- Washington County, Ala. July the 10th, 1849 Sir Father. Yours of the 24 inst. Came to hand yesterday. It afford me grate pesure to here that all was well. I had just returned from Uncle James and they were all well and he has a very fine prospect for a corn crop but his cotton has bin ingered by the rain and he is in the grass with it. They have if posseighbley had more rain up thare than they have had here and it has rained more than half the time since I have bin here. I have seen a good deal of this old worn out country sence my arrial here and I have all so seen a good many of your old acquaintances who is very much worn and _ at stonised to think you are not as old looking as they are. And among them is Mr. Winders from gocean. They are agoing on bravely here with there terpintine business I expect that there is at least tow million pine trees now in old Washington County that is runing and they count on three hundred barrels of rosom from eight thous trees and one hand can at tend to that number of trees and then expect $2 per bl. The candidates are in the field for the legislator. They are three in number, L. B. Turner., Maloan and William Smith. I think that Mr. L. B. will be the elect. They have some public speaking here. The candidates for Congress is going round. They are to Speak at the Bladen Springs on the 17th, at St. Stevens l8th of this page 2 month. I expect to attend and here what the wise men of the State has to say. with regard to Texas. The question of Whig and Democrat is not rage- ing as high as it has here to foe. They are talking a good deal about the Ohio & Mobile Rail Road. They say they will carry it into operation immeediateley but how they will succeed I doant no. I have commenceed suit on the Cartright noate aga- inst Mr. Williamson & Mrs. Shaw. I braught suit in the July tern of the Court. Hon. Mr. Williamson sayes that he will stop the suit if he can posseighbley raize the money before judgement is given. I dont think that he will be able to raze the money without Mr. Chaney will loan it to him. I was detained on Galveston fore days and I was very well pleased with the situation for a town. It is truley a delightful place but New Orleans was wright to the reverse. It was beyond a doubt the worst looking place' that ever was seen. The musketoes you might of killed thousands of them at one rake with a brush. They were as thick as they could swarm all up and down the warf. I remained Mobille from Thursday morning until Satur evening at Mr. Camels and during the time the burial of Edmon P. Gains took place. It was one of the biges gatherings that has ever bin in the place. The soaldery was all in there uniform and paradeing all day and evry half hour they fireed the canner at the Armour and the City Council was formed in evening and members of the Masonick fraturnity page 3 was all dressed in there regailior and mached down from the Lodge to the Armourery and from thare to the Church and thare they was delivired by Parson Anderson a most splended Masonick sermon as the las tribute of respect to the Dead. I doant think that any of them here will ever come to Texas as long as they can live here. I dount in ten to persuald any of them. I have told them that I didant colrne here to big them go to Texas but iŁ any of wasnts to move I will as cist them all I can in guitting thare. I have nothing more to say to you than that ir will here. Nancy is improv slowley. Very respec (looks like a) H ? Jacob Grimes The envelope addressed as follows:- To the Hon.
