Duplin County, NC - Jesse Grimes Letters ----¤¤¤---- Letter # 87 Branches Store, July the 25th/56 Dr Uncle, After my respects to you and all relation & friends., I take my pen to inform you that yours of the 1st ult. came to hand on the 22nd and was gladly received and contents noted. I am glad to learn your crops are an everage one for ours seems just at this time like not making over half what they would of made owing to drouth and I learn it is mutch worse in many place than hear, though I-hope we will have rain today as all appearances bid fair. I shewed your letter to Dr. N. W.Herring this week and he told me that if you wished to get him back to Texas to select him a Texas lady to make him a wife and there would be some probability of his coming and he would like to settle there and moreover he would like to have a lady that was acclimated to your country. His crops he says is fair, as for Col. Daniel Herring, he is in such a way of going to see the widders, he speaks but lltely of coming after his saddle and sends his best respects you and family. Father is tolerable well, also A.B. Branch and wife are up going though he is not, and I dont think ever will be well as he is dispeptic. As for his Tennessee Raider wife, she is modest, unasuming and I hope industrious but not accomplished with education. As for her like or dislike of Guffords Branch, she does not speak, but I hope she will be sattlsfied as I think her lot will be to remain there. As for my worn out old farm, including where I was raised and the Ben Snipes old farm. Page 2 I hope to make a plenty to eat. My family not Well, a negro woman down with typhoid fever and Jermmima is attacted with pneuralagy in the head, worse of a night than day. our State is going ahead in agricultrial pursits by way of reclaiming worn out land with various kinds of manure, such as guoanna, mud out of swamps and composts of vegitable matter & lime whitch answers a valuable purpos. Inturnal improvements seems rather at a stand owing to the scarcety of money in circlulation. Governor Bragg, I think, will be elected by 2 or 3000 votes in the State and in that event Buchanan & Breckinridge will carrie the State also. I thin^ the contest lyes between Buchanan & Freemont and should not Buchanan git anough at the Electorial College toprevent it from going to the house, Freemont will be made President and then a desolution of the Union comes immediately and then will the Know Nothings South see their earor and not untel then. But none so blind as them that wont see etc. It is mail time and I must close. Please answer this on its arrival and let me know all the knews in Texas and out that you think important. Yours in hast, James G. Branch No envelooe for the above letter- __________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
