Duplin County, NC - Jesse Grimes Letters ----¤¤¤---- Letter # 94 Letter written Sept. 19th, 1858, very hard to read in places, but will do my best to type what i can make out, spelling will be as written, where i can not make out what is written i will put____.CGT 4/15/2000. *note that the S's are like a capital S in the letter. This is letter # 94 in the Jesse Grimes collection in The Center for American History, Austin, Tx. Sept. 19th, 1858 Choctaw County State of Alabama Hon Jesse Grimes Dear Uncle, As it is the first time I ever attempt to address you I am rather at a loss for Something of importance to Communicate to you, my family is all up enjoying comman health only there have been more or less Sickness through this Country generally this fall, Some deaths in my knowledgehave occurred even in this neighborhood where I reside, the weather is dry and cool for the season have had more or less dry weather ever Since Cotten __ of July, before that period there was plenty of rain, the corn crops Suceeded in making a good crop, but cotton crop quite inferior it is the presumption of farmers that it will not exceed more than a half a crop the __ Season owing to dry weather _ _. Brother Jesse when first arrived here thought he would try to arrange matters , So he could __(return?) to Texas in July, but I was very back__ in my crop conseqwently?? I could not conveanently delay any time until the crops had nearly got ready for baying by then we made an effort to come to Some understanding which terminted as follows the propity was appraised except the land we mutually agreed to value that ourselves {the heirs} I and my brother-in-law Mr. Culpepper agreed after having a fair division to buy brothers interest in all he had here what_ be disposed of at present legally, before we could get the money and pay him up the yellow fever had made its appearance in New Orleans, therefore he deem it _ of imp_dence to undertake to go back by Water, So he declined it and he made arrangement than to go a land trip via Akansas, to Start middle of August but being inform of the difaculty passing through the Miss. Swamp, he refused it until the 7th Inst. then Jesse and two other men left for Texas by land I have not heard _ word of them Since their departure. Uncle Jesse I have a request to ask you, that is to do with Jesse to Settle himself and get in to Some Study? __. I would suggest marring _ about as good a _ as any. I beleave to Settle a man of roving notions he has neither Farther(sic) _Mother as you already __, to advise him, he is young , he has the the utmost confidence in you as a friend and Uncle and So do I from caracter not from Personal ac____ there are many whom will commence _ _____ never contented only when things are _ , _ Jesse have the least idea that i would write to any one this ___. Uncle Jesse it would be of grate pleasure indeed to me if we could meet face to face one time this Side of the grave, to enjoy the happy moments we would be together I do hope you'll excuse any words that are Spelled incorrect and also any grammetiecal errors for I am not a Scholer,So nothing more at present I remain your friend and relative until death.
