Duplin County, NC - William Grimes Papers Pleasant Valley, Ala. Oct. 28th 1862 My dear Sister: As I have not written to you In some time and Florence Is writing, I thought I ought to write you a few lines. We are all well. Pa & wife are both well. They have a little baby, It Is a girl, they have named It Ermlnia Collier. It goes by the name you give me. Pa Is as proud of It as If he never had any. Benton's wife has another little girl, also sister Martha. Well to tell you the truth, Alice, every lady In the whole county has got one and some two and some three. You remember Miss Julia Richardson. She married about a year and a half ago. She had a baby the other day. She Is about 40 years old. Well Alice, I have no news to write that will Interest you. We have not heard from Levl and Leslie In some time. The last letter I got from Levi, he said that Leslie was well and his health was tolerable good. He said that Leslie and himself had come out of the battle unhurt. Ben Porter was missing, he did not know whether he was killed or not. Their captain was badly wounded. Fred Smith was wounded in the Battle of Seven Pines and died soon after. He did not live more than six days. Johnny Henz went through safe. Crops have turned out bad. Pa has not made much more than half as much as he made last year. Alice you must excuse me for not writing oftener than I do for paper is so scarce that when I get hold of any I always write to Levi. I don't know where I will get the next piece to write on. I must tell you something about my little children. They are both well. The baby, a little boy, is the same age of yours. He was born the First of Feb. He can walk around a chair, can say two or three words. He is not married My little Clara looks very much like your little Estelle. She is very smart. Excuse my poor letter. Write soon. Give my love to Wm. and kiss the children for me. I remain your affectionate Sister, Laura. Note:- The above is a copy of a letter with no envelope written to Alice Rain Grimes, wife of Wm. S. grimes, by her sister Laura (perhaps Parks) who married the second time a Mr. Boswell after the death of her first husband. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
