I left home and traveled south, as follows:- Crossed Sabine at Grand Bluff, through Carthage in Panola. Stay At Mrs. Tippet’s, 9 miles below Carthage in Panola, ferriage 10cts. Saw some pretty land, long bodied pine, walnut & ash. May 12. Wednesday. Bill $1. Traveled 8 miles, mare taken sick. Stop at Philip Graves, mare dies 9 o’clock P.M., suppose to be staggers. May 13. Thursday. Help haul off mare. Get young Graves to carry me to Worsham’s. 18 miles. Get there at 8 o’clock, pay him $2.50. Some good creek land. May 14. Friday. Look around, drive & remain here. May 15. Saturday. Go to Smith’s after dinner, 14 miles. Get there before night. W.P. Smith just arrived. May 16. Sunday. Returned home this evening to Worsham’s. May 17. Monday. Remain at W’s. Saw the neighbors. May 18. Tuesday. Rainy, thunder, hold up, drive, kill deer. May 19. Wednesday. Leave Worsham’s with his pony Peter. Stop at Nacogdoches, get pony shod. Stay at Weaver’s. Bill $1.75 for shoeing. Crossed some large creeks, good land. May 20. Thursday. Cross Angelina at Laflors. Pay 25cts. No swamp. Go up the river a mile, neighborhood road. Stay at John Garner’s no bill, hear his ferry on Neches. May 21. Friday. Cross Neches, river high, swamp overflowed all the way. Make for Sumter, Trinity County, stay there. May 22, Saturday. Bill $1.25. To Ryan’s ferry 18 miles, piney country, ferriage 20cnts. Trinity. Travel hard over bad road. Stay at Woodall’s, a poor place, pay $1. ugly country. May 23. Sunday. Pass Governor Woods and get to C.M. Wheeler’s on the bank of Trinity river, new place. Stay all day. May 24. Monday. Leave Wheeler’s & go to Harrell’s, remain. May 25. Tuesday. Start for Montgomery. Stay at Wm. Fowler’s. May 26. Wednesday. Got to Montgomery & Franks’s for dinner. May 27. Thursday and May 28, Friday. Stay at Womack’s & look about. May 29. Saturday. Leave W’s & go to Jesse Grimes. Remain there and look about till Sunday, June 13, start home. Stay at Spillers, 33 miles, bill $1. Pass through Huntsville on Monday, June 14. Stop & look at penitentiary. Cross Trinity at Wiser’s, 10cts. Sulphur Springs, stay at Clark’s. June 15. Tuesday. Bill $1.25. Traveled 38 miles and 38 today. Stat at Kyle’s, pay $1, travel 33 miles. June 16. Wednesday. Cross Neches at Stirret’s, 10cts. Big Muddy, 10cts.Stay at McCrommicks, pay $1. Travel 33 miles. June 17. Thursday. Pass through New Salem & Henderson. Stay at Wm. Young’s, clever man, traveled 33 m, pay 75cts. Pass Tip & Tuck ledge of rock, good spring. Turn for Ramsdell’s old ferry. Pay 10ct. Friday. Leave Young’s & traveled as above.
