Duplin County, NC - William Grimes Papers ¤¤¤¤¤¤ Mobile Sept. 15th 1892 Mr. Wm. Grimes, Panola, Txs, Dear Brother, Your letter reached me last week. Have just returned, from a visit to sister Laura, who lives at the old place In Washington Co. You would hardly recognize the old home of former days, it is so changed. The trees have grown to an enormous size, and the woods have grown quite up to the enclosure. All between the dwelling and horse lot is a dense groth, some of which are large trees. It is more thickly settled in that neighborhood, but oh! how poor the people are. A good many of the voters are Alliance men, and to hear them talk, put me in mind of the old fire eaters before the War. The prospects of the farmers are very gloomy, having everythAng against them this summer. Rain and floods have done their part in de- stroying crops and I suspect politics have taken a hand. Walter Ernest is at work in Florida at present. His children are in Miss. & La. I don't know what he Intends to do with them during school session; but I thin^ if there are school facilities with his sisters. It would be better to keep them there. I am too old to take charge of young children, and they are too young to be left alone. I will be 6? years old next February. Tho' I do not look so old, I feel it. Mrs. Rush (Cousin Glo.) died about three weeks ago of heart trouble. Laura's son, Jimmie, has gone out to your State, but to what point, can't say, as did not see him tho he passed through here. He was not at home when I was there. Am glad you wrote me about Dollie and Clinton; have often thought of asking you about them. Am sorry that C. Is so poor and that Dollie is having trouble about her property, hope she will be able to hold it. Give them my love. Am glad that Mary P. has been so fortunate; but think it bad that she allows hereelf imposed upon by Oscar Johnston. You did not say which one of your daughters was so sick. I was sorry to hear it and hope she is convales- cing. You do indeed have great trouble, but must endeavor to bear up under it with Christian fortitude. You have my heart felt sympathy and prayers. You say nothing about visiting us. Hope you have not given up the idea. When you come bring Bertie with you. We all want to see you both. Leslie joins me in love to you and daughters. Nothing more, but remaining Your Sister, Martha E. Taylor. Note:-The above is a copy of a letter mailed at Mobile, Alabama, on September 15, 1892, at 2 P.M. addressed to Wm. J. Grimes. Arleston.
