Duplin County, NC - James Jesse Huggins, Confederate Soldier ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ James Jesse Huggins, son of Solomon Sisero and Balsorah (Humphreys) Huggins, was born December 11, 1840 in Duplin County, NC and died March 10, 1887 in Sampson County, NC. He married on August 25, 1865 in Sampson County, Elizabeth Ann Kornegay, daughter of Marshal and Catherine (Cogdell) Kornegay of Sampson County. He was a school teacher who resided with Dr. Henry Faison's family at Faison Depot in Piney Grove Township, Sampson County, before the Civil War. J. J. Huggins served in Co. E & Co. I, 20th Regiment Infantry of North Carolina, a Confederate unit, during the Civil War. He was as a member of the "Duplin Grays" which was raised in Duplin County, NC and enlisted at Fort Johnston, Smithville (now Southport), NC on April 27, 1861. The unit was mustered into Confederate service at Fort Johnston on June 18, 1861 and assigned to the 20th Regiment NC Infantry as Company E. While with Co. E, James Huggins served with his brother, William Henry Huggins and several cousins. He was appointed Quartermaster Sergeant on September 1, 1861 and transferred to the Field and Staff of the regiment and was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on March 10, 1863 and transferred to Co. I of the regiment. This company was known as the "Sampson Grays" raised at Clinton, Sampson County, NC and was a sister company of Co. E having been mustered into the regiment on the same day at Fort Johnson. James Huggins was captured at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863, confined first at Fort Delaware, DE until he was transferred to the Union's POW camp for Confederate Officers at Johnson's Island, OH where he arrived July 20, 1863. He was transferred to Point Lookout, MD on March 14, 1865 and was received for an exchange of prisoners at Cox's Wharf, James River, VA on March 22, 1865. The 20th Regiment NC Infantry (Confederate) was originally organized for one year as the 10th Regiment NC Volunteers, but was redesignated the 20th Regiment on November 14, 1861. The regiment was reorganized for 3 years or the war in April 1862 and was surrendered at Appomattox Court House, VA on April 9, 1865. It was assigned to the Department of North Carolina from June -September, 1861; the District of the Cape Fear, Department of North Carolina from September 1861-June 1862; Garland's Brigade, D. H. Hill's Division, Army of Northern Virginia from June-September, 1862; Garland's- Iverson's-Johnston's Brigade, D. H. Hill's-Rodes' Division, 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia from September 1862-May 1864; Johnston's Brigade, Early's Division, 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia from May-June 1864; Johnston's Brigade, Early's-Ramseur's-Pegram's Division, Valley District, Department of Northern Virginia from June-December 1864; and Johnston's Brigade, Pegram's Division, 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia from December 1864-April 1865.
