Duplin County, NC - William Henry Huggins, Confederate Soldier ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ William Henry Huggins, son of Solomon Sisero and Balsorah (Humphreys) Huggins, was born March 31, 1842 in Duplin County and died March 6, 1918 in Polk County, Fl. He is buried in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Winter Haven, FL. He married about 1872/3 in Sampson County, NC, Susan L. Kornegay, daughter of Marshal and Catherine (Cogdell) Kornegay. Susan Kornegay was born February 27, 1844 in Sampson County and died July 13, 1891 in Goldsboro, Wayne County, NC. She is buried in Willow Dale Cemetery, Goldsboro, NC. W. H. Huggins served as a private in Co. E, 20th Regiment NC Infantry. The Company was originally known as the "Duplin Grays" which was raised in Duplin County, NC and enlisted at Fort Johnston, Smithville (now Southport), NC on April 27, 1861. The unit was mustered into Confederate service at Fort Johnston on June 18, 1861 and assigned to the 20th Regiment NC Infantry as Company E. (NC Troops, 1861-1865: A Roster, Vol. VI: Infantry, p. 480) While with Co. E, William Huggins served with his brother, James Jesse Huggins and several cousins. He was wounded at Winchester, VA on September 19, 1864, but was returned to duty by December 31, 1864 and was paroled at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. W. H. Huggins applied for a Confederate Veterans' pension from the State of NC on July 6, 1914 in Wayne County, NC. In his application he states that he is aged 72 and that he was wounded by a "minie ball" in the ankle during the battle of Winchester. (NC State Archives, NC Confederate Pension Applications, Act of 1901) His enlistment papers give his occupation as "Clerk" prior to his enlistment and in the 1880 Wayne County census and in subsequent censuses he is listed as a hardware store merchant. After Susan Huggins' death in 1891, W. H. married his second wife a woman named Maggie, and migrated to Polk County, FL with his daughter and son-in-law, John and Anne Bizzell. After John Bizzell's death, Anne returned to Wayne County, NC where she died and is buried in Willow Dale Cemetery with her mother and 3 of her children. __________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
