He was listed as being born in Duplin Co, NC, age 18, occupation, farmer; height, 5 feet 11 inches. He mustered into service 31 Dec 1861 at Camp Mangum. The Company muster roll of 31 Mar 1862 indicates he was a Private in Company A, 38 Regiment NC Infantry (State Troops). The roll indicates he was home on leave for twenty days from 2 February 1863. He was promoted from Private to 3rd Sergeant 14 Mar 1863. On 3 Jul 1863, he was wounded and left at Gettysburg, Pa., and captured. His name appears on a list of Rebel Sick and Wounded Prisoners of War received at De Camp General Hospital, David's Island, New York Harbor. His name appears on their Register of Officers and Soldiers of the Army of the Confederate States who were killed in battle, or who died of wounds or disease, dated 13 Jan 1864. Record of Death and internment indicate that he was interred on 13 Jan 1864 at Cypress Wills Cemetery. Residence before enlistment, Kenansville, NC; single, age 22.
