Duplin County, NC - Reunion and Feast - Remnant of Company E ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Remnant of Company E met at Calypso last week in Annual Reunion - Happy Occasion. Calypso, NC, July 29 Editor Tribune: Gathered beneath the canopy of a forest in a lovely park on a hot July day less than a score of men whose locks have been whitened by the frost of many winters, pushed back the hand on the dial of time four decades or more to the good old time of "ante bellum" days when a man's value was not measured by dollars and cents, to the days when they contributed their share of courage and devotion to immortalize the names of Lee and Jackson, and the heroic fortitude and fidelity of our Davis, that has eclipsed the brightest stars in the galaxy of fame. The reunion of Company E 20th NC Confederate Veterans was in session. Fourteen of the thirty living members answered the roll call, the business feature was harmoniously dispatched, the present place and date was unanimously chosen for next year's reunion. Comrades Hicks, Martin and Kornegay were appointed a committee to arrange for the next meeting, whereupon the trio met and foreshadowed an event to duplicate the Richmond Reunion, a resolution of thanks was passed to Mr. Martin and his family and Mr. Pattin for services connected with the undertaking and the "craft was called from labor to refreshments," and this "deponent's" (V.B. et. al.) unspoken verdict of winks was fully justified when the feast was spread, but the bys "tted" fair. Among the invited guests was a yankey (ex-union soldier) to gratify our desires to (dis) arm to our heart's content and was glad he escaped the fatal rebel lead, but expressions of regret were common that all the other yankeys were not killed. The yankey thanked us but realized it was through no good will of ours 47 years ago, but his mother's present of two fleet legs that saved his life. Eighty cents was over-subscribed for the dinner and a novel plan of an auction to dispose of the remnants was inaugurated. The sum of $3.00 was realized, and all ordered it donated to the Confederate Soldier's Monument at Kenansville. Hicks Lenoir County Community College Genealogy Verticle File - Confederate Veterans - LH03748 (written on margin) This is a copy of a newspaper clipping found in the family bible of Hark Mark Barbee and wife Eliza Rogers Barbee (m. 1831). Their daughter, Hannah Elizabeth married Giles M. Martin on the 15th January 1873 (in Alabama-J.M.O.). Apparently reunion was in early 1900s.
