Duplin County, NC - William Sheppard Revolutionary War Pension ~~~~~~~~~~ January 26, 1931 Mrs. R. B. Browder 1415 Isabella Avenue Houston, Texas Dear Madam: You are advised that it appears from the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim, R.9479, that William Sheppard, with his father, whose Christian name is not given, and his stepmother, Mourning Sheppard, moved shortly after the Revolutionary War from Duplin County, North Carolina to Effingham (later Screven) County, Georgia. He died October 18, 1835 in Screven County, Georgia. He left no widow but the following children survived him: Harvy or Hervy Sheppard, William Sheppard, Lorenzo Sheppard, David Sheppard, Sophia Boykin, Martha White and Eliza Stephens. The name of their mother is not shown. On April 11, 1845, Harvy Sheppard, then aged forty-five years and a resident of Screven County, Georgia, applied on behalf of himself and the other surviving children, for the pension that might have been due their father, William Sheppard, and alleged that while residing in Duplin County, North Carolina, he volunteered about September, 1777, for a tour of twelve months as a private under Captain Ivy and Colonel Rhodes in the North Carolina Troops; that during that period he was elected Captain, and that he afterward served as Lieutenant and Captain in the North Carolina Troops until after the battle of Eutaw Springs, his whole service amounting to at least three years and three months. His claim was not allowed as he failed to furnish proof of the alleged service as was required by the pension laws. Very truly yours, R.H.
