The data furnished herein were obtained from papers on file in pension claim, R. 11395, based upon the military service of William Whitfield, the only soldier by that name that is found in the Revolutionary War records of this office. On March 16, 1844, Mary Whitfield, a resident of Ewington, Effington County, Illinois, aged eighty-seven years, applied for pension as the widow of William Whitfield. It was alleged that while living in Duplin County, North Carolina, William Whitfield enlisted in the spring of 1777 and served three months as private in Captain Quinsey's Company in Colonel Ben Sasser's North Carolina Regiment; that in the fall of 1777 he enlisted and served until after the surrender of Cornwallis as private in Captain Ben Graham's or Grimes' Company in the "Rockingham Regiment" and was in the battles of Hickory Plains, Charleston, Ramsour's Hill, Broad River, Cowpass, Rutaw Springs and Yorktown. The claim for pension was not allowed as proof of the alleged service was never furnished. It was stated that William Whitfield married September 9, 1775, in Duplin County, North Carolina, Mary Beck. He died August 8, 1825 in Stewart County, Tennessee. In 1844 the widow, Mary, stated that she had lived in Duplin County, North Carolina, Christian County, Kentucky, Stewart County, Tennessee, Fayette County, Illinois, and Effingham County, Illinois. William and Mary Whitfield had thirteen children but only the four youngest were living in 1844. The eldest child was born about four months after William Whitfield went into the service and the second child was born January 19, 1783. The only names given were, Bryant who was youngest and in 1844 was living in Effingham County, Illinois, aged thirty-three years, and William who died in Kentucky several years prior to 1844. In 1844 the widow's sister, Anna Slocumb, was about eighty-five years of age and was living in Wayne County, Illinois. Very truly yours, A.D.
