CAMPBELL DIES THIS MORNING Henry Murphy Campbell, age 47 years, well-known retired merchant of Franklin and husband of Mrs. Ruth Camp Campbell, died early Friday morning at his home “The Elms” on Clay Street, after an illness of several months. He was the son of William David and Mrs. Janie Murphy Campbell of Wallace, North Carolina. Mr. Campbell was born in Hope Mills, N.C., and attended school in his early years there, later moving to Franklin with his parents and attended the Franklin High School and the University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Wallace, where he became a member in early childhood. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner. Mr. Campbell returning to Franklin fifteen years ago married Miss Ruth Camp. He was owner of the Virginian Pharmacy here, retiring a few months ago due to ill health. In this business he made many friends and was loved by all who knew him. Besides his wife and parents he is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Rufus A. Hunter and Miss Virginia Campbell of Raleigh, and Miss Lena M. Campbell of New York, and two brothers, Major F.M. Campbell of the U.S. Army and David Campbell of Wallace. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock at the residence by Rev. R.D. Stephenson. Burial will be made in Poplar Spring Cemetery. THE TIDEWATER NEWS – 11-09-1945, P. 1 Funeral services for Henry Murphy Campbell, whose death occurred last Friday were held from his home, “The Elms,” Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock, conducted by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson, pastor of the Franklin Baptist Church. The service, in keeping with Mr. Campbell’s oft’ expressed desire was quite simple. Joel Cook Holland of Murfreesboro sang “In the Garden;” Mr. Stephenson read the scripture lesson, prayed and closed the service by reading the poem. “If You Go First.” The casket was covered with a blanket of flowers and there were numerous floral offerings. Burial was made in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the pallbearers being: Dr. Dean B. Cole and Dr. Jim Bise of Richmond, Edward F. Gilliam, Dr. Morgan B. Raiford, Jack Hall, Marion Whitfield and J. Edwards Moyler of Franklin, and Charles R. Starkey of Suffolk. Masonic rites at the grave were in charge of the Mason of Wallace, N.C. Mr. Campbell was 47 years of age, born in Hope Mills, N.C., but long a resident of Franklin where he attended the Franklin High School, later going to the University of Pennsylvania. Fifteen years ago he married Miss Ruth Camp, who survives him, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Campbell of Wallace, N.C.; two brothers, Major F.M. Campbell, U.S. Army, and David Campbell of Wallace, and three sisters, Mrs. Rufus A. Hunter and Miss Virginia Campbell of Raleigh, and Miss Lena M. Campbell of New York. Henry Campbell was genial, friendly and one of the most accommodating person we have ever know. He literally possessed a host of friends, and if he had a single enemy his name does not occur to us, who had known him for at least 30 years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in his home town, Wallace, a Mason and a Shriner.
