He was born June 26, 1868, at Warsaw, N.C., the son of Henry James and Harriet Barden Carlton. Surviving are his wife, the former Lora Geneva Bugg of Albemarle County and the following children: H. Otis Carlton of Belle Glade, Fla., C. Leroy Carlton of Mebane, N.C., Mrs. J.N. Moseley of Littleton, N.C., the Rev. Graham Carlton of Portsmouth, and Herman O. Carlton of Boykins; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Mrs. M.C. Patterson, Baltimore, one brother, W.L. Carlton of Calypso, N.C. Mr. Carlton was agent and telegraph operator for the Seaboard Railway for 45 years. He was a member of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers, Woodmen of the World, A.F. & A.M Lodge No. 183 and the Boykins Methodist Church. Funeral services were held at the residence Sunday at 3:30 p.m. with the Rev. L.F. Callaham, pastor of the Boykins Methodist Church officiating, assisted by Dr. John Paul Tyler, District Supt. of the Portsmouth-Newport News District, the Rev. J. Felix Arnold, pastor of the Boykins Baptist Church, and the Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the Franklin Baptist Church. “Nearer My God To Thee” was sung by the members of the Boykins Methodist and Baptist Choirs: “The Old Rugged Cross” by Mrs. H.M. Purviance and “Some Day We Will Understand: by Miss Emily Hines, Mrs. Purviance, Lonnie Story and the Rev. Felix Arnold. Interment was made in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins. Pallbearers were E.R. Bryant, J.R. Hines, W.H. Powell, J.Y. Mason, S.J. Myrick, H.M. Drewry and J.T. White of Norlina, N.C. The honorary pallbearers were members of the Mens Bible Class, railroad associates and other friends. The esteem in which Mr. Carlton was held was shown by the many beautiful flowers. Mr. Carlton had been a resident of Boykins for 40 years. On October 3, 1939, he and Mrs. Carlton celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.
